A New Chapter for Iowa Social Studies: Four New Books for Grades 2–5
There's something special about discovering how the places we know connect to the bigger story of our country. From exploring local communities to learning about the events that shaped American history, social studies gives students a chance to ask questions, make connections, and better understand the world around them.
That's why we're excited to introduce four new Iowa social studies books for grades 2–5!
Developed to support Iowa's Academic Standards for Social Studies, these new resources bring together engaging content, inquiry-based learning, and literacy connections to help students explore history, geography, civics, and economics in meaningful ways.
Four New Books, More Ways to Explore
Each new title offers something different, giving students opportunities to build their knowledge and develop essential social studies skills as they progress through elementary school.
Grade 2 – Iowa, Our Home
Students begin by exploring the communities, cultures, geography, government, and economy of Iowa. Along the way, they'll discover how people and places shape the world around them while developing foundational social studies and literacy skills.
Grade 3 – An American Adventure
Students take a journey through early American history, from the first peoples of North America to Iowa's beginnings. Through historical evidence, maps, and engaging lessons, they'll explore the people and events that helped shape the nation.
Grade 4 – Founding a Nation: Themes in US History
This book takes students further into American history, exploring important events and developments, including the American Revolution, westward expansion, and Iowa's journey to statehood.
Grade 5 – Building a Dream: Themes in US History
Students continue their exploration of American history, examining the people, events, and changes that shaped the nation, including industrialization, the Civil Rights Movement, and other important developments.
Bringing History and Inquiry Together
Throughout the new books, students are encouraged to do more than read about history. They'll examine primary sources, explore maps and timelines, consider different perspectives, and connect what they're learning to the world around them.
Engaging features and activities also bring literacy into social studies instruction, giving students opportunities to strengthen reading, writing, discussion, and critical-thinking skills along the way.
For educators, the programs offer flexible instructional resources, activities, assessments, and support materials designed to help meet the needs of different learners.
Looking Ahead
We're looking forward to seeing these books make their way into Iowa classrooms! All four titles are expected to be available in Spring 2027, and we can't wait to share more as their release approaches.
