We couldn’t let Black History Month end without introducing you to our newly revised Black and African American Studies resource: Movement.

Movement: Themes in Black and African American Studies, Second Edition, builds on the foundation of the original by expanding content and refining structure to better support classroom instruction.

Movement highlights stories, figures, and developments from diverse Black communities while exploring themes such as migration, oppression, identity, expression, joy, and resistance. In their exploration of the book, students will learn the terms and tools they need to analyze the impacts of race and ethnicity in US history. They will explore the immense resources that are available in their communities and work toward solutions for issues they care about.

With over 80 pages of new material, including an additional unit dedicated to African history and culture, this edition offers broader representation, more featured individuals, and additional primary source excerpts. Units are now organized into longer, lesson-based formats tied to student learning goals, making the text more in line with our other diversity studies titles. This edition has also been shaped by increased coverage of the AP African American Studies essential knowledge standards and expanded educator review and feedback.

“Collaborating with Black studies scholars and educators on Movement: Themes in Black and African American Studies, Second Edition, was an honor and a meaningful learning experience for me. This resource represents our commitment to making sure students encounter a fuller range of experiences and contributions in the US story and gain the critical thinking skills needed to engage with history, literature, art, and society.”
